No. 8 (2019): Nationality and National Identity
Current Issue
The issue of Iranian identity and its meaning in the historical experience of Iran in the years after 1978 has become one of the most controversial issues in the academic world and the public arena in Iran. The formation and presence of a theocratic government and its reliance on religious identity is a kind of rupture compared to 1978. Profound developments within Iran and the region have caused identity debates to be repeated periodically like fire under ashes. What has changed in recent decades compared to the past is the flourishing of historical research on Iran on the Constitutional Revolution, the formation of Iranian nationalism, and the background to the debate over collective identity in Iran. This rich literature sheds light on the dark corners of contemporary Iranian history and raises new debates and theories about collective identity.
