The Impact of Nationalism and Colonialism on Islamism
Downloads
In this article, I intend to show the impact of nationalism and colonialism on modern Islamic thought. By modern Islamic thought, I mean the ways in which Muslims reinterpret and conceptualize Islam. I deal with the general tendencies of the Muslim imagination and re-examination of Islam, which has been prevalent since the late twentieth century. My argument is that modern Islamic thought has several basic features that testify to the impact of the Islamic world on Western colonialism. To do this, without limiting the discussion to a particular personality or place, I examine numerous examples and different cases to show how modern Muslims have generally internalized the colonial discourse on religion, nation, and state. Modern Islamic thought is overly intertwined with the idea of controlling the power of the modern state, which is inherently a nationalist phenomenon.
